Odds N' Ends
Our Blanchard roots are mostly from the Connecticut and Vermont area of New England, decended from Amasa Blanchard. If you're a member of this clan, join the Yahoo Group and keep in touch with everyone.

This web page is just a collection of things that we are involved in. Things like mountain biking, bike commuting, hiking,  Ham Radio (K1YPP, Dennis, KA1FUN, Jane and K1ZEO, Áine).  Our son Tom graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA. You can see his website at Toms work. (Click on the painting to enter).   Our daughter, Áine, is a  microbiology graduate from Worcester Polytechnical Institute (WPI ), in Worcester, Massachusetts and is currently employed with New England Biolabs.

Below are some of our favorite racing photos. At the Bradbury race in Maine, I'm in yellow (Dennis) having one of my better racing days, leading the Bradbury Mountain Race in the Spring, 2002. This is the Eastern Fat Tire Assoc., EFTA, Novice Masters race. EFTA, sponsors some great racing in New England. I ended up 5th in the race, and went on to win the overall Championship for the year.  The photo of Jane is at the Bear Brook race in the Spring of 2002 (Jane took 2nd in her division Championship), the photo of Áine is at the Watershed Wahoo Race in Auburn (Áine won her division Championship), NH in the Spring of 2002.  The family had an excellent racing year in 2002!

If you're in New Hampshire, check out Exeter Cycles!
When I visit New England, I make it a point to stop in my favorite northern local bike shop, Exeter Cycles, in Exeter, New Hampshire (Near Hampton Beach area). John and his staff will make you feel at home and be sure to ask about their group rides, both street and mountain bike. Tell them I sent you!

If you have had a bicycle stolen, check out the following link:

Outdoor Activites:

Another of our favorite activities is hiking. As a family and individually we all love and enjoy being outdoors. Most of our hikes have been in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, but there have been a few in South Carolina, Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts as well. Currently I'm a member of the Appalachian Trail Club of Florida, based in Sarasota, Florida.

I recently completed a hike of the Appalachian Trail. This hike is approximately 5 million steps, 2200 miles and 95 miles of vertical climb!

Ham Radio Topics:

My favorite antenna for 160 Meters is the Jade Marconi. We used to manufacture this antenna and now our company has closed its doors, but this antenna is really the solution for those with limited real estate and yet seeking decent performance.  Click here to see how to build The Marconi Antenna...

I recently completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, starting May, 2008 and carried 40/80 Meter QRP equipment. For updated info check:

from time to time as well. I'm kept a trail journal at:
Dennis on Kerrigain

K1YPP Trail Journal for the 2008 Appalachian Trail Thru-hike.

The original start date was 16 April, 2007,  see more at the trail journal. I ended up returning to Sarasota, Florida in July 2007 for  six-artery bypass heart surgery. I  returned to Pearisburg, VA on May 20, 2008 to restart the trek. I did carry a QRP amateur radio for the journey.

I usually run 5W on a Heathkit HW-9,  Drake TR7 or Yaesu FT-857. Often I can be found checking into the Michigan  CW QRP net on Tuesday nights at 21:00 Eastern Local time on 3.535 MHz and into the New England CW QRP net on Thursday nights on 3.565 MHz at 20:30 EST. Other favorite activities are PSK31 on 20M, 40M and 80M.

I do a fair amount of bicycle commuting as K1YPP. Here is a photo of my 2 meter mobile setup. It uses a Yaesu VX1-R in a handlebar pack, with an external battery and a homebrew J-Pole whip antenna. The bicycle is a Cannondale T800. I wear a headset/microphone and use a push-to-talk switch on the handlebars.
